I have a slight obsession with owls. To the point that I even have an Owl themed board on Pinterest.
Last week I was itching to get out my crochet hook and make something new. Something that I had never made before. This cozy was the result.
Would you like to make your own crochet owl coffee cozy? I hope you said yes because I listed the steps I took to make it below! Enjoy!
*Note: This project requires that you have basic crochet skills. If you do not know how to crochet, I recommend visiting the Crochet Geek on You Tube to learn basic stitches.
** This cozy is made to fit a travel mug or cup and is not the correct size to fit a standard coffee cup.
- Size I – 5.5mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn – I use Vanna’s Choice Acrylic Yarn because I like the softness and the stretch it gives. I was able to create 5 cozies from 1 skein of blue yarn. You will also need black, white, orange and a coordinating color to make the eyebrows.
- Yarn Needle
- Craft Scissors
- Stitch Marker
Step 1: Chain 28 and join with a slip stitch. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch so that you will know approximately where to stop at the top.
Step 2: Do not turn and single crochet in every chain around the circle. Continue to single chain like this around the circle without joining until you have 15 rows. When you get to the same place where you placed your stitch marker at the bottom, join with a slip stitch and weave in all ends with your yarn needle.
Step 1: Using your black yarn, chain 2. 8 hdc in the second chain from your hook. Join with a slip stitch, cut yarn and weave in ends with your yarn needle. (8 sts)
Step 2: Join with your white yarn. Chain 2 where you joined. Do 1 hdc in the same stitch and do 2 hdc in each stitch around. Finish by joining with a slip stich. Leave a long enough tail so you can sew the eye on. (16 sts)
Step 3: Eyebrow. Using whatever color you want for the eyebrow, join to the white. Chain 2 where you joined and do a hdc in the next 7 stitches around. This will give you an eyebrow on top of the eye. Using a slip stich, finish off and weave in ends with a yarn needle. (8 sts)
Step 4: Repeat Eye steps 1-3 to create a second eye.
Step 5 Using your yarn needle, sew on the eyes in the right positions. You will have to eyeball this to determine where you would like them. Use your yarn needle to weave in any ends.
Step 6: Using your yarn needle and the orange yarn, embroider the nose onto the cozy by simply doing a single stitch several times, decreasing as you go down so that it looks like a nose.
Step 7: Cut 2 pieces of each color of yarn 2 inches long. You will use one piece of each color per side. Using a slip knot, tie them onto the sides at the top. Trim ends to be the same length.
Place on your favorite travel mug and enjoy!
